Custody/Parenting Time Terms To Know

The courts/statutes no longer refer to issues related to the children as “custody”. Instead, three separate issues are addressed by the court: Parenting time, allocation of parental responsibilities (decision making), and child support. So, there are a few terms you will often hear. • Joint decision making: both parents make joint decisions regarding the child(ren) including health, education, and religious decisions
• Parenting time: shared time and living arrangements for the child(ren)
• Sole decision making: one parent/guardian has sole decision making authority for all issues regarding the child(ren)

There are many different types of parental agreements. It all depends on your family and what is in the best interest of the child. If you and your co-parent can work at finding an agreement without the court’s involvement, you can have much more control over the outcome.
