Protecting Your Child’s Future

Coming up with a parenting time agreement that works for both parents can be extremely difficult. These are typically cases involving a lot of emotion, and it can be hard to manage your relationship with their other parent while determining what is best for your child.

The lawyers at Warren, Carlson & Moore, LLP, have helped Niwot families find solutions since 1975. We will help you determine the right approach to your parenting time case, and work to help you create an agreement that is best for your child. Together, we can help you play an active part in your child’s life.

Custody/Parenting Time Terms To Know

The courts/statutes no longer refer to issues related to the children as “custody”. Instead, three separate issues are addressed by the court: Parenting time, allocation of parental responsibilities (decision making), and child support. So, there are a few terms you will often hear. When working with our firm, we will help clarify these terms and what they will mean for you and your family.

  • Joint decision making: both parents make joint decisions regarding the child(ren) including health, education, and religious decisions
  • Parenting time: shared time and living arrangements for the child(ren)
  • Sole decision making: one parent/guardian has sole decision making authority for all issues regarding the child(ren)

There are many different types of parental agreements. It all depends on your family and what is in the best interest of the child. If you and your co-parent can work at finding an agreement without the court’s involvement, you can have much more control over the outcome.

That being said, there are often cases that are going to require the courts to make a decision. In Colorado, the court will look at a number of factors to find a solution it feels is in the best interests of the child. It can be a very stressful situation, and we are here to help you work through the process.
